    Earning their Money

Posted in Fun Stuff on May 4th, 2009

Anyone who has come into a busy commercial port at night will appreciate this video. I always find it amazing how the pilots get these massive things through such confined spaces. The pilots definetly earn their money.

    Enjoy!

    When would you go?

If you were planning a passage from Miami to Bimini or Cat Cay across the Gulf Stream in the 24 to 72 hours when would you go? Have a look at a couple of these weather sites and do some armchair sailing.

    Seeing things?

Nope. Apparently they loaded the powerboat with a forklift.

    The Professor and the Leviathan

“I had memories of the light and shade. It’s what I referred to at the time as the land of shadows, as you see virtually no sunshine. Here, everything is grey. Following on from that you play in the grey nuances: it’s a little grey, very grey, or rather a grey white fog… Now, you are in this atmosphere, your experience of it is black and white”. The air temperature is 8°C, and the water temperature is virtually identical. This morning, I was in the cockpit and I saw a strange thing in the water… A big eddy…. I looked at it again and I saw a black back coming towards me. The creature was 30 metres from me, heading straight towards the aft of the boat. I said to myself, that’s it: it’s going to break my rudder! And then hup, it plunged beneath the water and I never saw it again. It didn’t just measure a few metres in length, it was a big 15/ 20 metre creature… Enormous… !”

    Beautiful Stories

Posted in Sailing, Fun Stuff on December 4th, 2008

I love sailing! I love the competition, I love being close to nature, and I love working on these beautiful machines that we take across oceans.

Every once in a while you will see a painting, hear a piece of music or see some video that totally captures why we bother with all of this craziness to get to the start line.

    So with that…

    Ho Ho Ho

This Saturday we entered the boat in the Santa Claus Parade, which was totally a blast. Once again the Leaders in Training from the Boy’s and Girl’s Club stepped up to help organize things for the parade.

The kids were troopers as it was a really cold night, but it was even worse for us as we were way up on the deck of the boat as we made our way down Princess Street. Nothing a few blankets and hot chocolate couldn’t fix, but it was pretty darn cold out there.

I’m not much of a Christmas person, but I have to say that it was a fantastic way to get into the spirit of the season.

Once again, a big thanks to the LIT group, John for driving, George and th Girls for helping to decorate the boat, Alison for helping with all of the logistics, Pride Marine for loaning us their truck, and the the Downtown Kingston Business Association for putting on a great event.

    Queen of the Depths

I’ve been doing a lot of studying on coastal navigation lately, so I have been paying attention to the recent inquiry around the tragic sinking of the Queen of the North.

The Marine Services guys at MTO are paying attention to this stuff too, and a friend of mine just emailed me a link link to the media files on the inquest. This simulation video (windows media file) is especially interesting. Make sure you have the volume up on your computer so you can hear the radio transmissions.

I find it absolutely amazing that on a ship with chart plotters, radar and a whole bridge staff, that this kind of thing can happen.

And Now For Something Completely Different…

I’m going sailing, but here is something to entertain you at work on a Friday…

    The Chemical Brothers totally rock!!!
